The Mandrill Bust
A new Edge Sculpture Mandrill Bust by Matt Buckley – see the launch video below.
A dramatic and powerful piece, the Mandrill Bust from Edge Sculpture is an unforgettable addition to any home. Designed by renowned sculptor Matt Buckley, this striking bust captures the vibrant intensity of one of the animal kingdom’s most visually arresting primates. With bold colours, dynamic textures, and a commanding presence, the sculpture blends contemporary design with natural realism. The rich blues and fiery reds of the mandrill’s facial markings are brought vividly to life, contrasted beautifully against the muted earthy tones of its fur. From every angle, the sculpture radiates character, strength, and unmistakable attitude—perfect for anyone looking to make a statement with their interior décor.
Each Edge Sculpture piece is hand-finished, and the Mandrill Bust is no exception. Meticulously crafted from a ceramic polystone blend, the sculpture achieves a wonderful balance between fine detail and rugged texture. This eye-catching piece will draw attention and spark conversation, whether placed on a feature shelf, console table, or focal display cabinet.
About the Mandrill Bust
Mandrills are among the most fascinating and recognisable primates in the world, thanks to their vivid facial colouring and expressive features. Native to the dense rainforests of western Central Africa, particularly in Gabon, Cameroon, and the Republic of the Congo, mandrills live in large social groups—some of the largest gatherings seen in any non-human primate. Males are particularly distinctive, with brilliant blue and red skin on their faces and rumps, used to assert dominance and attract mates. Their striking appearance isn’t just for show; it plays a critical role in social interaction within their troop.
Despite their vibrant looks, mandrills spend most of their time foraging on the forest floor, feeding on fruit, seeds, fungi, and small animals. Known for their intelligence and complex social behaviours, they use facial expressions and vocalisations to communicate with each other. Sadly, mandrill populations are under threat due to habitat loss and hunting, making awareness and admiration of these creatures all the more important.

How the Madrill is Made
Edge Sculpture pieces are designed and sculpted in the UK by Matt Buckley, whose distinctive style combines emotional expression with contemporary artistry. Each sculpture starts with an original clay design, which is then developed using a special ceramic polystone to allow for both strength and incredible detail. Hand-painted and finished with meticulous care, every sculpture is a standalone work of art. The Edge range brings together the raw beauty of wildlife with a modern aesthetic, making it a favourite among collectors, interior stylists, and animal lovers alike.
The Mandrill Bust perfectly embodies the spirit of the Edge collection—bold, modern, and brimming with personality. Whether you’re a fan of exotic wildlife or simply appreciate impactful design, this piece is a stunning tribute to one of nature’s most extraordinary primates.
