About the Mandrill Bust

Mandrills are among the most fascinating and recognisable primates in the world, thanks to their vivid facial colouring and expressive features. Native to the dense rainforests of western Central Africa, particularly in Gabon, Cameroon, and the Republic of the Congo, mandrills live in large social groups—some of the largest gatherings seen in any non-human primate. Males are particularly distinctive, with brilliant blue and red skin on their faces and rumps, used to assert dominance and attract mates. Their striking appearance isn’t just for show; it plays a critical role in social interaction within their troop.

Despite their vibrant looks, mandrills spend most of their time foraging on the forest floor, feeding on fruit, seeds, fungi, and small animals. Known for their intelligence and complex social behaviours, they use facial expressions and vocalisations to communicate with each other. Sadly, mandrill populations are under threat due to habitat loss and hunting, making awareness and admiration of these creatures all the more important.
