About this new sculpture

The North American bison (Bison bison), commonly known as the buffalo, is a symbol of strength and resilience on the continent. Historically, tens of millions of bison roamed the Great Plains, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem by grazing vast grasslands and supporting biodiversity. Their presence was integral to the lives of many Indigenous peoples, providing food, clothing, and materials for shelter.

In the 19th century, overhunting and habitat loss brought bison to the brink of extinction, with numbers dwindling to mere hundreds. Conservation efforts in the 20th century have led to a significant recovery, with current populations estimated at around 500,000, though only a fraction are considered wild and free-ranging. Today, bison are celebrated not only for their ecological importance but also as a testament to successful conservation initiatives.

How this sculpture is made

Creating an Edge Sculpture involves a meticulous process that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Each piece begins with a conceptual design, which is then sculpted from clay to achieve a dynamic and organic form. A sturdy armature supports the wet clay, allowing the artist to shape the sculpture with energy and fluidity. Once the clay model is complete, a high-quality rubber mould is crafted to capture every intricate detail. This mould is encased in a strong, sealed case to prevent leakage during the casting process.

The casting involves pouring a special mixture of marble stone into the prepared mould. The mould is then placed in a vacuum chamber to eliminate air bubbles, ensuring a flawless finish. After curing and hardening, the cast is carefully removed and undergoes fettling, sandblasting, and levelling to prepare it for painting. Skilled artisans hand-paint each sculpture, applying chosen hues to bring the piece to life. The final product is a striking, contemporary sculpture that serves as a statement piece and conversation starter in any home.
