The Craftsmanship Behind Edge Sculpture

The Art of Sculpting

Every Edge Sculpture piece begins with a vision—one that takes shape through traditional hand-sculpting techniques. Unlike conventional sculptures that rely on extensive sketching and planning, Edge Sculpture pieces are often developed organically on the turntable, allowing the raw energy and emotion of the design to emerge naturally.

A sturdy armature provides structural integrity, enabling the sculptor to shape the wet clay dynamically while maintaining balance and form. This approach results in sculptures that feel alive and expressive, capturing the movement and essence of each subject.

The Moulding Process

To ensure that the intricacies of the original sculpture are perfectly preserved, the moulding process is carried out with extreme precision. A rubber mould is created to capture every fine detail, encased in a strong outer shell to prevent distortion. The process involves careful placement of cut-lines and vents to eliminate air pockets and ensure a flawless reproduction.

Casting with Marble-Based Stone

Each Edge Sculpture piece is cast using a marble-based stone resin, giving it the weight, texture, and durability that set these sculptures apart from mass-produced alternatives. The liquid stone mixture is vacuum-treated to remove air bubbles before being poured into the prepared mould, ensuring a smooth, high-quality finish once set.

Finishing & Painting

Once removed from the mould, each sculpture undergoes a meticulous fettling process, where skilled artisans remove any casting lines and refine the finer details. Multi-part sculptures are then assembled using steel pins and resin, ensuring a seamless final form.

Painting is the final stage in the creation of an Edge Sculpture piece, where the studio’s expertise in colour application brings each sculpture to life. The Miniature Spartan, for example, features a verdi-gris patina, giving it the appearance of aged bronze. Every sculpture is hand-painted, with each brushstroke applied to enhance the texture and depth of the design.

The final result is a piece that blends contemporary artistry with traditional sculpting techniques, making Edge Sculpture a unique and highly sought-after brand in the world of modern sculpture.
