How to Make Your Living Room Feel Cosier for Autumn

Tips to get cosy for Autumn

There’s something about autumn that makes home feel that little bit more important.

As the weather becomes cooler and we start spending more time indoors, the living room becomes somewhere to retreat to at the end of the day. It’s where we curl up with a coffee, catch up with the family, watch a favourite programme or simply enjoy having nowhere else we need to be.

Creating that warm, welcoming feeling doesn’t necessarily mean redecorating the whole room or replacing everything at once. Sometimes, adding just one key piece of furniture can make all the difference.

A new lamp table can help turn an unused corner into a cosy spot for reading. A sideboard can give everyday clutter somewhere to disappear, leaving the room feeling calmer and more relaxing. Even replacing an old TV unit can give that part of the room a fresh new focus and help bring everything together.

Add a little softer lighting, rearrange some of the furniture you already own and bring out a few favourite possessions, and suddenly the room can feel quite different.

Here are a few simple ideas for creating a living room you’ll love spending time in this autumn.

Rethink Your Seating

Before you start looking for a new sofa, take a fresh look at the seating you already have. Sometimes a few small changes are all that’s needed to make your living room feel warmer and more inviting.

If your sofa is still comfortable and in good condition, adding a couple of cushions or a favourite throw might be enough to give it a cosier feel for autumn. Or perhaps what the room really needs is an extra chair to create another comfortable place to sit.

A reclining chair can be particularly inviting at this time of year – somewhere to put your feet up with a coffee, read a book or settle down in front of a favourite programme.

It’s also worth thinking about how your seating is arranged. A cosy living room should work just as well for conversation as it does for watching television. Two smaller sofas positioned opposite or angled towards each other can create a much more sociable space. In a room with a fireplace, a two-seater on either side can create a wonderfully welcoming arrangement where people naturally sit and talk.

If your current sofa has seen better days, or the seating simply isn’t working for the way you use the room anymore, then it may be time to consider something new.

The good news is that you have far more flexibility than simply choosing another three-seater. Many of our sofa collections are available as chairs, two and three-seater sofas and corner configurations, allowing you to choose a combination that works for your room and your family.

Think about the upholstery too. Fabric can introduce softness, colour and texture, while leather offers a smart, timeless look that is practical for everyday family life. There’s no right answer – it’s about which feels most at home in your room.

And if cosy evenings are high on your wish list, take a look at reclining options. Being able to put your feet up and find your favourite position can turn an ordinary evening on the sofa into somewhere you genuinely look forward to settling down.

You don’t necessarily need more seating or new seating. Sometimes you just need to look at what you already have and ask: could this room work a little better?

The gallery below shows a few ways to arrange sofas and chairs to create a welcoming space where everyone can relax, chat and spend time together.

Add the Warmth and Character of Wood

There’s a reason wooden furniture has been at home in our living rooms for generations. It brings a natural warmth and character to a room that can instantly make it feel more welcoming.

It also has a timeless quality. Styles and trends come and go, but beautifully made wooden furniture rarely feels out of place. It can sit just as comfortably in a contemporary home as it can in a traditional cottage or period property, and you can change everything around it over the years without necessarily needing to change the furniture itself.

Quality matters too. Many of the wooden furniture collections at Progressive are craftsman-made, designed to be lived with and enjoyed for years to come rather than simply following a short-lived trend.

If you love the fresh, natural look of lighter oak, Hardwick Light Oak is a wonderfully versatile collection with plenty of pieces for creating a coordinated living room.

Ivan Oak offers another take on classic oak furniture, while Loxley brings its own distinctive character and styling to the room.

Whichever style you prefer, you don’t have to replace everything at once. A new coffee table can give the room a natural focal point, a sideboard can add warmth as well as useful storage, or a pair of lamp tables can help create those smaller, cosier areas around your seating.

And because good wooden furniture doesn’t need to shout for attention, it provides a lovely backdrop for everything else in the room – your sofa, lamps, photographs, books and all those personal things that make a house feel like home.

 Soften the Lighting

Lighting can completely change the atmosphere of a room.

A bright central ceiling light might be useful when you’re looking for something, but when you want to settle down and relax, smaller pools of light around the room can feel much warmer and more inviting.

A lamp table beside your sofa creates the perfect spot for a table lamp, while a console table can bring a softer glow to a darker corner or hallway opening. A lamp placed on a sideboard works beautifully too, adding warmth to the room while gently highlighting photographs, flowers or favourite ornaments displayed alongside it.

Progressive Furnishings also has a selection of lamps available in our Forest Town showroom, so it’s worth having a look when you visit.

You may be surprised by just how different your living room feels when you switch off the main light and let those smaller, softer pools of light take over.

 Give Everything a Home

Cosy doesn’t have to mean cluttered.

In fact, it can be much easier to relax in a room when all those everyday bits and pieces have somewhere to disappear.

And you don’t necessarily need lots of additional furniture to achieve it. A coffee table with drawers or shelving can provide a handy home for remote controls, magazines and books, keeping them close at hand without leaving everything scattered around the room.

A sideboard gives you even more useful hidden storage, while the top becomes somewhere to display the things you do want to see – perhaps a favourite lamp, family photographs, flowers or treasured ornaments.

Don’t be put off by sideboards if your living room isn’t enormous either. Ranges such as Hardwick Light Oak and Loxley include more compact options that can give you valuable extra storage without overpowering the room.

TV units can help too, particularly those with cupboards, drawers or shelving for keeping media equipment and all the little extras that seem to gather around the television neatly organised.

The idea isn’t to create an empty, perfectly styled room. It’s simply about giving the everyday clutter somewhere to live, leaving more room for the things you actually enjoy looking at.

Don’t Forget the Things That Make It Yours

Perhaps the most important part of creating a cosy living room is remembering that it doesn’t need to look like a showroom.

Everything doesn’t have to match.

Some of the loveliest homes are an eclectic mixture of old and new – furniture chosen today sitting alongside things that have been collected over many years.

That vase that’s been in the family for as long as you can remember, a photograph that always makes you smile, something you brought home from a favourite holiday or a plant in a pot you love all bring personality to a room.

Put an old ornament on a new sideboard. Leave a favourite book on your coffee table. Mix contemporary furniture with possessions that have a story behind them.

It’s those little differences that give a room character and make it feel collected rather than styled.

After all, a cosy home should look like somebody lives there – and more importantly, it should look like you live there.

Create a Living Room you’ll love coming home to

Making your living room feel cosier for autumn doesn’t have to mean changing everything.

It might begin with a wonderfully comfortable new sofa. Perhaps you’ve been looking for a sideboard to finally tackle the clutter, or a new coffee table and occasional furniture could bring the room together.

Then add the things you already love, turn on a lamp, get comfortable and enjoy your home.
