We all collect many possessions over the years and eventually storage becomes an issue, finding somewhere for your precious items to keep them safe or having somewhere to display ornaments or books. Here at Progressive, we have a few tips for you on how to de-clutter and have space for everything you wish to keep.

De-clutter

Firstly, be ruthless and get rid of anything you no longer need or want, either donate to charity or use local selling forums to make a little money from your unwanted items.

An untidy house can cost you time in finding lost things and cause stress and frustration in the home. A tidy house with a place for everything is much more likely to stay tidy with the whole family pitching in. No more picking up toys and clothes if they have their own home.

If you feel like the character in the image below, it’s time for a declutter!

Hotspots

Look for those hot spots around the home where things tend to accumulate, magazines on the sofa, kids’ toys on the floor or letters and paperwork on the dining room table and just not enough space in your kitchen for serving dishes and your best pottery. A hallway is a place that can get easily cluttered with coats, shoes and bags. Once you have identified where you truly need extra storage it will be much easier to decide what to buy.

Checking Measurements

It sounds simple, but before ordering anything, make sure you have space for it, you’d be surprised how many times we’ve delivered a large piece of furniture only for the customer to find it overhangs the doorway by several inches. Also, you need to check access, is the staircase wide enough, will that new sideboard get through the front door and down the hallway? All of our products have exact measurements on each of our product web pages, but if you need a little more advice, then please feel free to call us and ask for more details on the product you are interested in.

Choosing Furniture

Now the fun part starts, choosing the right piece of furniture from our large selection.

Display Cabinets

If space is tight, consider a tall display unit that is perfect for keeping your precious collectables safe. Our display cabinets include the Loxley Glazed Unit, the Ivan Oak Glass Display Cabinet, the Penelope Painted Display Cabinet with a cupboard at the base, the Hardwick Light oak glazed Cabinet with drawer plus many more. A few are shown below.

Coffe Tables

A coffee table with drawers is also useful as it is a dual purpose providing a place for drinks with hidden storage that takes up no additional space. We’d recommend the Loxley Rustic Oak Coffee Table with its two deep drawers that can be accessed from either side or the Penelope Grey Coffee Table with two deep drawers and a shelf under for additional storage.

No matter what size your space for new furniture is, we have storage cupboards and sideboards in all shapes and sizes from extra small cabinets at just 800mm wide to large sideboards at 1490mm wide and all sizes in between that! A sideboard is a perfect place to store larger items such as serving dishes and placemats in your dining room and a place for everything from books, magazines, DVDs and toys in your lounge.

Console Tables

Not forgetting the hallway, where keys get lost and mail gets dumped, we have a range of console tables to keep your hallway tidy without taking up too much space.

Sideboards

We have a large range of sideboards and chests that make perfect storage around your home. Think out of the box too, a chest of drawers isnt just for a bedroom, use it in a dining room or lounge to store books, magazines or even crafts supplies.

Sidebaords are the ulimate in storage for a lounge, dining area or even a hallway if you have the space. We have sideboards firm the small two doors version through to large 3 doors with shelves too. With one of our sideboards, there will be a space for everything. Also, whatever you choose, there will be other pieces in the range to decorate your chosen room.

Here are a few of our most popular sidebaords.
