Choosing the perfect Matt Buckley edge sculpture for your home
When you are decorating a room or moving into a new home, you have many things to consider such as curtains, flooring, wall coverings or paint, colours and furniture. Once you have chosen your style and have everything in place, accessories such as pictures, vases or ornaments and sculptures will provide the finishing touches and will add your personal style to the room. Your favourite items along with carefully chosen statement pieces will help to bring a room together and give the space a complete look as opposed to disparate items randomly placed.
With a little thought and forward planning, a well-chosen sculpture in your room will create a feature, a talking point for visitors and give you pleasure for many years. Our Edge Sculptures are perfect for adding such a statement to any room. They can be as small as the Robin at just 20cm high and as bold as the Elephant Bust at a majestic 68cm wide and 47cm high.
Your choice of Edge Sculpture will depend on a few factors, namely:
Room Theme – does your room have a central theme, e.g. classically decorated with bold wallpaper, modern with clean white walls or something funkier using bold or bright colours as you will want to choose something that either compliments your scheme or maybe contrasts to stand out and make a bold statement.
What type of furniture have you chosen may influence your choice, for example, if you have light oak furniture such as our Hardwick Oak you may prefer a bold darker coloured sculpture such as the Bay Horse Bust or if you have darker furniture such as our Modern Sheesham range, you could choose a pale sculpture such as the beautiful Cleopatra Bust in Desert to add contrast.
To fit with your room theme, if for example, you have a collection of wildlife prints on the walls, add some 3d wildlife with The Lion, African Elephant or Orangutan or if you have a cool calm almost zen theme to your room, try the ethereal Venus Bust in Stone.
Statement pieces such as the Dragon, Wolf or a playful Hare will add a bold statement in any location you choose to place them.
Space & position
Your choice of sculpture will to some extent depend on what space you have. Too big and will dominate the area and too small, it will get lost and make no impact.
If you are looking for some interest on a mantelpiece, choose a smaller footprint sculpture such as the Hare. If you are looking to make a statement, say on a hall table, a dining room table or maybe on an open space on a display cabinet or bookshelf, try one of the bolder sculptures such as the Elephant bust, a Grizzly Bear or even the dramatic Rhino Bust.
Re-position your sculpture
Another trick you may try, is to move your sculpture around or even to a different room, you may see a colour or feature you have missed in different lighting conditions. Also, the ‘mask’ type edge sculptures such as the Elves, standing Cats or Tiger bust are best viewed from the front or at slight angle whilst full 3D sculptures such as the seated Cats, Squirrel or Polar Bear are ideally best placed where you can get a full 360 degree view of the piece such as on a dining table.
Which room to display your sculpture
Most people will be looking for a sculpture for a lounge or dining area, somewhere it can be seen and enjoyed by everyone in the home along with your visitors. But to be a little different, why not try a feature sculpture in your bathroom or bedroom if space allows. A larger sculpture can even be placed directly on the floor in a hallway as long as it doesn’t interfere with daily life.
Lighting
You may also want to consider adding lighting to really make your choice of Edge Sculpture pop. Place a lamp behind or above the piece, place it under a spotlight in a cabinet or on a shelf or you can even place twinkly battery lights inside an open back sculpture such as the various masks.
Your choice
Whatever style your home is decorated in and whatever room you choose for your sculpture, the choice really is a personal one based on what you like and find appealing. If you are an animal lover, try collecting the seated or standing cats, they look impactful when placed together. If you are a dog lover, we have the Bulldog Busts or the seated bull terriers. We even have one customer who has purchased a Bulldog Bust to place the ashes of his dearly loved bulldog into as a permanent reminder of his favourite pet.
Keeping your Edge Sculpture clean
To keep your chosen sculpture in tip-top condition just gently dust with a soft feather duster or similar synthetic duster to keep dust from settling into the design of the sculpture.
To help you chose your perfect sculpture, you can see the whole range of Edge Sculptures on this website or if you visit our showroom, they are all on display so you can see them close up before making your final decision. You can even move them around the showroom and place them on various pieces of furniture to give you a better idea of what it will look like in your home. And of course, our helpful staff will be on hand to help you make your choice.

Edge Sculptures – How they are made
As many of our clients like to know how and where the sculptures are made, here are the details. Firstly, they are all made in the UK in Shropshire by the designer Matt Buckley and hand finished with the help of his talented team of artists. They are perfect examples of contemporary sculptures that will become the collectables of the future.
Design
In stage one, Matt researches the subject to create an initial design. Starting with a basic sketch he then moves to design in clay on a turntable relying on his minds eye for aesthetic judgement.
Sculpting
The figures are formed in clay on a sturdy frame to ensure the piece will hold the weight of the wet clay. Composition is paramount in order to make a figure that will stand solidly whilst retaining a deliberate rawness to the finish.
Moulding
The sculpture takes pride in keeping the integrity of the original clay sculpture in every subsequent piece so producing the rubber mould is a critical stage. The clay subject is placed in a sealed case to enclose the piece as closely as possible, then pre-vacuumed liquid rubber is poured. Once the rubber has hardened, it is carefully cut from the original clay and is now ready for use.
Casting
Once the mould is ready for use, a mix of marble resin is carefully poured which is then lowered into a vacuum chamber to remove any unwanted air bubbles. Once cured and hardened, the cast is removed, and the first clean white sample of the piece is ready.
Fettling, sandblasting and levelling
This stage is essential to prepare the piece for painting and finishing. One of the experienced ‘fettlers’ will remove any mould lines and casting residue using various tools and sanding blocks. Any sculptures that are made from several pieces are assembled using steel pins, resin and glue. The piece is then sandblasted to give it a slight key ready for painting.
Painting & finishing
To add the finishing touches, the piece goes to the design studio where colour patterns are developed and chosen hues applied. All pieces are hand finished by a talented team of artists. When finished, this piece becomes the Studio Master. All subsequent prices are compared against the master to ensure an excellent level of consistency and continuity.
Once is finalised the piece becomes a part of the range and is the pride of the sculpture and the development team.
