About this new sculpture

The North American bison (Bison bison), also known as the buffalo, has long symbolised strength and resilience. While bison once roamed the Great Plains in vast numbers, their populations dwindled to near extinction in the 19th century due to overhunting and habitat loss. Conservation efforts have since restored their numbers, and today, the bison is celebrated as an ecological and cultural icon. The white buffalo, in particular, holds profound spiritual significance for many tribes, representing sacred connections and the fulfilment of prophecy.

How this sculpture is made

The creation of an Edge Sculpture is a detailed process that combines traditional artistry with advanced techniques. It begins with a conceptual design that is skilfully sculpted from clay to create a lively and organic form. A strong internal armature supports the wet clay, enabling the artist to shape the piece with precision and fluidity. Once the clay model is completed, a high-quality rubber mould is made to capture every fine detail. This mould is then encased in a sturdy outer shell to ensure durability during the casting process.

The casting stage involves pouring a specially formulated marble stone mixture into the mould. To achieve a flawless finish, the mould is placed in a vacuum chamber, removing any air bubbles. Once the material has cured and hardened, the cast is carefully removed and prepared through processes such as fettling, sandblasting, and levelling. Finally, skilled artisans hand-paint each sculpture, applying carefully chosen colours to enhance its intricate details. The result is a contemporary piece of art that makes a bold statement and adds character to any space.
